When I awoke, only a few hours had passed. The fire burned low in the hearth, and despite the vast space between Fitz and me when I’d fallen asleep, I was immediately aware of a lack of warmth. Glancing over, I found his side of the bed was empty, the room silent and dark with only the dying embers casting an eerie, dancing glow.

Where had Fitz gone in the middle of the night?

I sat up, blinking to dispel the lingering bleariness of my vision, and strained to hear beyond the occasional muted pop of the fire. Outside, the wind whistled, and a branch scratched against a windowpane. Otherwise, the world was still. There were no whispers of restless ghosts, no footsteps from wandering fae in the halls.

Fitz’s coat lay discarded on a nearby chair. His charm. Though I doubted he would leave it for me to find, I still had to search everything. I had to know. Standing, I strode across the plush carpet and hastily rifled through his pockets. Nothing. I checked the inner pockets, but those were also empty. Almost as if he’d carefully emptied it before leaving. As if he’d expected me to wake and search his belongings.

That meant Fitz kept his charm on him at all times. My stomach churned. I would have to grow closer to him. My mind flitted toward the nightsweet concealed in my rooms, but I immediately discarded the thought. Even if I managed to slip something into one of Fitz’s drinks without being caught, once he awoke from his drugged sleep, he would know what had happened. I couldn’t risk making myself even more suspicious.

No, the nightsweet would be the perfect drug to use after I’d already found a way to save Father. When it was time to escape, and my family needed time. Especially if I thought there was a chance I could leave with them.

Stepping away from Fitz’s coat, I spotted my sheathed dagger on his dresser and seized it before turning to the sitting room.

My heart thundered and gooseflesh rose on my bare legs. Was I a fool for leaving the safety of Fitz’s rooms so soon after being grievously wounded? And yet, I’d escaped the ghosts and slain the creature that had attacked me. If I succumbed to fear, cowering in my husband’s quarters, how would I ever find my father? He might not be in the castle, but perhaps uncovering some of Fitz’s secrets would provide answers I desperately needed. Grasping the sheath so tightly my knuckles went white, I gathered my courage and strode forward.

The door swung open, and as Fitz stepped inside, I froze. Closing the door behind him, he leaned against it, scanning my bare legs before his gaze flicked to the dagger in my hand and then back to my face. “You must truly have a death wish.” He stalked closer, effortlessly plucking the dagger from my hands. “Haven’t you already learned not to stray beyond a locked door at night?”

I gritted my teeth.
